THE PRACTICAL GUIDE · AEO

Make your brand easier for answer engines to understand.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the work of making information about a brand useful, accessible, and clear enough that search and AI answer systems can discover it, interpret it, and potentially cite it. It is not a secret switch that guarantees a recommendation.

SEO and AEO are related, not interchangeable

Traditional SEO focuses on helping pages appear in search results. AEO also considers the answers generated by systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity: whether the brand appears, which sources are cited, and whether the description is accurate. Strong technical SEO can support discoverability, but answer engines use different systems and their outputs are not fully controllable.

Be careful with claims that promise a guaranteed position in an AI answer. Visibility can change between prompts, accounts, regions, and model updates. The useful goal is to improve the quality of your public information and then measure outcomes repeatedly.

A practical AEO checklist

01

Make important facts explicit

State what your company does, who it serves, where it operates, and how it differs. Use consistent names and facts across your site and reputable external profiles.

02

Publish pages that answer real buyer questions

Create useful, specific pages for the questions customers actually ask. Lead with a direct answer, then support it with details, evidence, examples, and a clear author or business identity.

03

Keep technical access healthy

Check indexability, canonical URLs, page titles, headings, internal links, and XML sitemaps. A page that cannot be fetched or understood is harder to discover.

04

Use structured data accurately

Add relevant Schema.org markup where appropriate, and keep it consistent with visible page content. Detecting JSON-LD alone does not prove it is valid or that an answer engine will use it.

05

Earn credible third-party references

Useful independent sources, expert mentions, reviews, and industry listings can help establish context. Avoid fake reviews, paid link schemes, and mass-produced directory spam.

06

Measure actual visibility

Track a stable set of buyer prompts across relevant answer engines, record brand mentions and cited URLs, compare competitors, and monitor qualified visits and conversions. Results vary by model, prompt, location, and time.

What to measure

Start with a small set of high-intent prompts such as “best [category] for [use case]” or “alternatives to [competitor]”. Run them consistently across the answer engines that matter to your customers. Record whether your brand is mentioned, whether a source URL is cited, which competitors appear, and whether the answer describes your offer correctly.

Then connect that visibility to business measures: qualified referral sessions, demo requests, sign-ups, and sales. A visibility score by itself is not revenue, and correlation does not prove that one content change caused a change in recommendations.
